The north-east work adventure – Jorhat

Day 9 – 27 February 2020

The driver arrived in a swift desire promptly at 6 am.

It has rained sometime in the night, the roads were wet, the sights were green and the weather was cool.

I Had requested the driver to include a trip to the boribeel road and rail bridge across the Brahmaputra and the sights were really awesome! Took a short timelapse of the skies from the bridge as well

Would have liked to get a side shot of the bridge, but that would mean coming back to the banks of the river on another route. No time for that!!

We had breakfast of fresh puri bhaji and jalebi at New Sharma Hotel Moran, and headed for Jorhat

Biswajit, the BEL officer at Jorhat and our point of contact called and asked us to come to the airforce base after we check in. He was wondering what we’d do there when the installation accessories had not yet arrived!

We booked our stay at MD continental hotel in Jorhat.

The hotel was inside a small by lane in an area called “Marwari Patty”. From outside it looked like a hole in a wall. But the hotel is built around in a maze like building having a total of 42 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a banquet hall.

Rooms were quite spacious, although the beds were hard as Rock.

We checked in and got the hotel porter to arrange an auto to the airforce gate.

Called Biswajit, who came to the gate in 30 mins.

Young chap, appeared to have quite the ego, didn’t exude the helpful attitude that all the other officers we’ve met so far.

For some reason he thought only 1 of us is coming when he had letters to make passes for 3 persons

He insisted on getting us the temporary pass so that he wouldn’t be needed to escort us everywhere.

After a good hour of futile effort he had to make a day pass. Requests for lunch were denied to us as well as the poor taxi driver, who was practically pleading for food as he hadn’t had breakfast either.

We proceeded to our site to see the material kept in the centre of the location catching dust for a year.

Luckily there was a hydraulic fork lift and a pry bar in the location. We moved the compressor to position, opened the crate. Made as much ready for next days activity.

Finished in about 90 mins and he came to pick us up and then dropped us to the hotel.

We headed to the market to buy some accessories for the Mieco pumps expected to arrive tomorrow.

Had a snack of aloo tikki, cutlet, bread pakoda and chai. Fun introducing new items to Y and J.

Had to get passport photos for J and to get my adhaar printed as well.

Found Tirupati machinery Store run by an alumni of Jain College. Y and J purchased much needed spares for the Mieco pump that is not included as part of “standard accessories”. God knows how this company operates!!!

Headed back to the hotel by 7 pm. Worked on quotes and replied to emails till 830pm and headed for dinner . Good food but a little overpriced.

Have to be at the airforce station by 9.30 am tomorrow. Was a long day today. Slept by 1030pm
